The CRMS Recognition System

The Recognition System at Colorado Rocky Mountain School has been in existence for fourteen years. It was introduced in the Fall of 2005 as a way to recognize each student’s contribution to the school. At its core are the Colorado Rocky Mountain School core values of Respect, Responsibility, and Excellence. The recognition system brings the CRMS program to each student as it allows us to measure growth over time, and, in dialogue with each student, strategize ways for continued growth. Through the recognition system, we believe that we can help build success skills and qualities in our students upon which they can draw for a lifetime.

So it was with great joy that I read the recommendations that came out last month from the Aspen Institute National Commission on Social, Emotional and Academic Development. The recommendations support what CRMS has been doing for over the past decade. It recognizes that young people need to develop in school the social and emotional piece as well as the academic piece – that none of these can exist without the other and that one is not more important than the other. I feel proud that CRMS has been at the forefront of this movement and have felt confident that we have helped develop balanced young adults as a result of our Recognition System.
